Yasmin and Yaz are the only birth control pills that contain drospirenone (DRSP).  This newer 4th generation progestin acts like a diuretic or “water pill.”  DRSP is known to increase potassium levels, which can result in hyperkalemia, a condition that can lead to serious heart and health problems.  Well over 50 deaths have been linked to the use of Yasmin or Yaz.  All of the women were of child-bearing age, some as young as 17 years old.

Yasmin and Yaz are also marketed to reduce water retention and bloating caused by premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).  However, the resulting excessive loss of body fluids can lead to dehydration which increases the risk of blood clots and kidney damage.  Both of these injuries have been reported by women using Yasmin or Yaz.

Yasmin, approved by the FDA in 2001, and Yaz, approved in 2006, are produced by Bayer Healthcare.  Their generic counterparts Ocella and Gianvi are made by Teva Pharmaceuticals.  Bayer has been cited by the FDA several times for false advertising of Yaz and Yasmin.  They were ordered to stop their misleading commercials that over-promoted the drugs while minimizing the risks.
